This one took on a bit of a surreal look...

January 6, 2009 Kathleen Hudson

...almost as if the scene, a warm gray lake under an ochre haze, could have been observed in the months after a nearby volcanic eruption. I can’t say that was exactly on my mind as I painted the picture, but that’s the beauty of watercolor: the medium has a mind of its own. I wound up liking it quite a bit since it gives a very haunting and still impression, although there is movement in the water suggested by the lapping waves.

“I will arise and go now, for always night and day

I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;

While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements gray,

I hear it in the deep heart’s core.”
— William Butler Yeats, "The Lake Isle of Innisfree"
